Data analysts work more closely with customers (internal and external) to fulfill their data needs and also work with BI analysts. A lot of times this is a mix of roles. Anyone who wants to get into BI must have technical and non-technical knowledge and skills. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights a few that will serve analysts well.
You don’t need to be technically skilled, just be willing to learn the technical side of the job. Having a business background is really helpful because it can help you understand business problems, understand the business itself, and generate ideas for stakeholders. It helps to ask the right questions to understand the needs of the business. Technical knowledge is useful in this field because you can get information about what can be delivered. As you move deeper from the data analyst role to the BI analyst role, and the merging that occurs between the two, additional technical skills such as SQL will be required. I would recommend that anyone in a data-driven role have Excel, SQL, and a visualization tool like Tableau.

Gis Salary Expectations: Climb The Gis Career Ladder
I personally didn’t get a data science degree, but I did on the job during my career and learned SQL. I got my Masters in Computer Information Systems, but it’s not necessary for a career in Business Intelligence! In the General Assembly Data Analysis Bootcamp, we teach not only the tools, but also how to formulate a hypothesis and work through an empirical process. Students build an Excel project, then a SQL project, and finally a Tableau project.
You can learn different business intelligence tools and techniques in different programs such as General Assembly or micro-masters offered at different colleges (all of which are longer). There are “boot camp programs” but these are usually longer than a 1 day session. There are also full degree programs in data analytics.
Depends on interest level, background, financial commitment, etc. The boot camp is the foundation for launching a career in data/BI. This is a career where we are constantly learning and acquiring new skills.
