Here is the game plan to work in the data community, in a way that will feel easy and fearless…

1. Follow people talking about information. Start listening to the conversation. Don’t worry about the noise. You will learn a lot just by consuming unsolicited information. You can work later. We recommend LinkedIn as the best place for this.

2. Monitor the discussion in the comments. What comments are there? What kinds of things do people add? What questions do they ask? Pay attention to the types of comments that feel important.

3. Add value with your comments. Publishing your posts can feel intimidating at first. So as long as you are ready, just start commenting and join the conversation that way.

4. Start sharing your posts. This is the part that scares people. But if you’ve done steps 1-3, you probably have a good idea of what the deal is about, and you probably have a plan for how you can add value. You can share something you have learned. You can ask a provocative question to start the conversation. You can solve the data challenges you are stuck on. The key here is just to stay connected to the data, and have a solid plan for the brand you want to build.

While most people reading this are early in their information careers, or trying to break into an information career, the first piece of advice I would give is John David Ariansen’s How to Get a Career Podcast. The content is perfectly captured in the title, and John David is both a teacher and a professional practitioner (the best person to learn from). You can watch them all here:

Next, we’ll introduce you to two thought leaders who will make you laugh as you learn about data, Susan Walsh – The Classification Guru, and Scott Taylor – The Data Whisperer. They bring two very special types, with an exciting energy that will get you into every topic:

Next, we’ll introduce you to Kate Strachnyi. You definitely need to check out DATAcated Kate’s live event, where you’ll find more people on this list here (PS – it’s free). Follow Kate here:

Speaking of Kate’s event, these two guys are two people I saw at the last DATAcated event, and they both smashed it. Avery impressed me with his excellent storytelling and presentation style. It also runs a bootcamp program for aspiring Data Scientists. George hosted a Data Light show, and I gave him a talk on Data Management (not usually my favorite topic) which succinctly explained the needs, key concepts, and made it easy to deal with. Check them out here:

Next we have Saurabh. He is a good man, who has his hands in different things, all the time. If you have a chance to talk to Saurabh, his energy is contagious. He is currently working on an interesting (and very challenging) NLP technique, and is also a teacher. You should check it out!

Then, there is Ravit. It’s EVERYWHERE. You may have followed him and seen his show, but if you haven’t already, you should:

Finally, we have some records of people talking about records AND something else. Eric Weber talks about SQL (the man behind his heart), technology, and mixes in career advice, life lessons, and is generally a great person to follow. Zach Wilson talks about information and is a big advocate for spreading mental health awareness. He talks about his journey in a way that will help others.
