2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms – Leading research firm Gartner has released the highly anticipated 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms.
As enterprise connectivity and collaboration become a more prominent theme across the CX space, the need for such solutions increases.
2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms
After all, analytics and business intelligence solutions not only reveal hidden insights throughout the enterprise, but also help create a unified view of CX. Thus, they allow each department to sing the same hymn.
Microsoft Surges In Gartner Quadrant With Power Bi
However, there is more to the platforms offered by the vendors in the Magic Quadrant. To understand these, here is how Gartner defines such solutions.
According to Gartner, analytics and business intelligence (ABI) platforms enable less technical members of CX teams to “analyze, explore, share and manage data.” The platform also allows users to discover and visualize insights while laying the foundation for cross-functional collaboration.
Artificial intelligence enables much of this functionality in modern systems, making information relevant to users and their workflows and easily accessible.

However, there are many more important features to consider before investing in an ABI platform. Gartner mentions the following 12 as good examples:
These characteristics are the fundamental source of the claims that distinguish the 20 vendors below. By carefully evaluating each, Gartner categorizes each vendor into four categories: leaders, challengers, visionaries, and niche players.
Leaders in the Magic Quadrant demonstrate advanced knowledge of key ABI capabilities and a commitment to customer success, combining a strong vision with a track record of delivering value. Not only do they demonstrate this value, but they also enable incremental procurement and scalability for businesses to meet the specific needs of companies in many industries. This year’s leaders are:

Gartner applauds the significant market reach and momentum Microsoft’s Power BI offering has gained due to its alignment with Office 365, Teams and Azure Synapse. Such a broad product portfolio – including vision-based data discovery, advanced analytics and interactive dashboards – demonstrates comprehensive vision and ambition. Apart from this, market analysts also highlighted the price and value of Microsoft solutions as a key differentiator.
With the acquisition of Tableau in 2019, Salesforce consolidated its leadership within ABI. This acquisition enables Salesforce to build an ecosystem that leverages all the benefits of MuleSoft, Tableau and Tableau CRM. In the report, Gartner praised Salesforce for this, along with its ease of use and analytics economy, making it easier for users to “access, prepare, analyze and present findings from their data.”
2021 is a big year for Qlik, with the acquisitions of NodeGraph and Big Squid, which give even more opportunities to the broad product portfolio. Gartner applauds these additions and sees Qlik Sense’s new machine learning and metadata management capabilities as a differentiator. Other factors cited by market analysts include the implementation flexibility offered by vendors, as well as their customer engagement and data literacy initiatives.
Power Bi Market Share
Well positioned in the ABI market, contenders in the Magic Quadrant offer proven capabilities that consistently deliver value to businesses with specific use cases. However, these suppliers seem to lack coordination between the various products in their portfolios. Or they may be behind the leaders in sales and marketing, industry-specific content and innovation. This year’s challengers are:
Since the acquisition of Looker in 2019, Google has made impressive progress in the ABI space. By integrating the ABI platform into its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem, Gartner applauds the ability for Google to combine its powerful capabilities with other capabilities in its cloud stack. Its in-database architecture and management—as well as application development resources—are also notable strengths. However, market analysts warn that advanced users need SQL skills.
According to Gartner, Domo has gained significant momentum in a crowded space. It noted the vendor’s rapid deployment and intense focus on consumer design as the main reasons for this, as the company looks to capitalize on the low-code/no-code revolution influencing enterprise technology choices. However, Gartner suggested that the company is lagging behind the market leaders due to a lack of access to a wider application ecosystem.
Gartner Magic Quadrant For Ccaas 2021
Visionaries in the Magic Quadrant offer differentiated, powerful visions for modern ABI platforms, delivering strong capabilities in their areas of expertise. Unfortunately, despite this thought leadership, they sometimes lack the broader capabilities to execute ABI solutions at scale and consistently. This year’s visionaries are:
Thoughtspot is launching a new “Developer Playground” in 2021, which gives companies the tools to build innovative data applications. This is just one example of how the company is realizing its consumer-centric vision, which was praised by Gartner in the report. Other notable benefits are scalability and market acceptance as an enhanced analytics platform. That said, the research firm cautions that Thoughtspot lacks the broader data and analytics ecosystem.
Having recently rebranded its ABI product as Sisense Fusion, Sisense has developed its vision – earning praise from Gartner. This vision depends on the provider’s microservices-based architecture, which is fully scalable. The development of its unique “multiplayer platform” is also an important advantage. However, the market analyst urged Sisense to expand into more areas – beyond manufacturing – as it differentiates itself from leaders such as Microsoft and Tableau.
Should We Forget Gartner?
With the addition of Cloud Coach and Code Innovate to Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC), Oracle has worked to maximize the efficiency of the platform, paving the way for co-innovation with customers. Such tools enable a consumer-centric product vision – for which Oracle was particularly recognized in the report. Its enhanced analytics capabilities across cloud offerings also differentiate the solution. However, Gartner highlighted concerns about momentum in a busy market.
In 2021, SAP prioritizes improving the usability of its ABI solution, SAP Analytics Cloud. By doing so, it simplifies the experience for users switching to the data warehouse cloud. Gartner praised the company for its “unparalleled” connectivity, as well as improved functionality and closed-loop analytics, which may justify its success. Nevertheless, the research firm warns that the use of SAP Analytics Cloud is low among companies that do not use SAP solutions elsewhere in the company.
Based on the machine learning and data democratization capabilities, advanced data preparation and predictive modeling have become the key strengths of TIBCO Software. Gartner takes note, while praising the vendor’s roadmap for cloud flexibility, enterprise readiness, and data and analytics convergence. Unfortunately, TIBCO Software may be lagging behind the market leaders in terms of product gaps, such as the lack of ability to build automated data stories from automated insights.
Gartner® Critical Capabilities For Data And Analytics Service Providers
SAS, which will launch SAS Viya 4 in 2021, has been specifically recognized by Gartner for its “market-leading” data visualization. The market analyst also noted that the vendor offers a “compelling product vision” for preparing and visualizing data for analytics, as well as building, operating and managing AI-powered data science models. However, Gartner questions the limited use of SAS solutions and its package pricing model.
Another household name making waves in the ABI space is IBM, which has won praise for its broad range of use cases, flexible deployment options and roadmaps for applying analytics elsewhere in the enterprise. The latter is particularly interesting as providers gather resource planning, reporting and analyzes in a central portal. Where IBM lags, however, is its lack of sales adoption drivers and pricing compared to cloud competitors, according to Gartner.
Yellowfin, which offers a cloud-agnostic architecture, has gained significant business through partnerships with ISVs eager to embed analytics into their enterprise applications. This openness – and integration with any market leader – is a key strength of the platform, in addition to its customer-centric vision and composition. However, the limited geographic reach and market momentum appear to be hindering the supplier’s leadership.
Sap Has Been Recognized As A Visionary In The 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms
By giving users a “what?”, “why?” and “how to?” style interfaces, differentiates Teluis ABI offerings. Its support for multiple roles, time-to-value for extended analytics and the scalability of the cloud ecosystem were praised in the report. However, market analysts pointed out areas for possible improvement – highlighting gaps in the use of data for storytelling and reporting, as well as a lack of availability of third-party resources.
Often with positive results in specific sectors or use cases, these vendors can offer ideal solutions for businesses leveraging specific cloud stacks. However, Gartner questions its ability to compete with market leaders in terms of innovation and performance. This year’s niche players are:
Recently, Amazon Web Services (AWS) took a big step into the world of augmented analytics by adding Q, a natural language query feature, to its Amazon QuickSight solution. The solution is closely integrated with AWS and is highly scalable. Despite the high brand awareness, customer adoption is still low. Gartner highlighted this point while suggesting that perhaps the company should prioritize developing an ecosystem of business applications.
