Máster En Business Intelligence – Case study: Load master data in SAP BW Page 1 of 5 Case study: Load master data in SAP BW BUSINESS CASE David Woods is Global Bike’s data warehouse architect and works closely with business designer Mike Jones. Mike implemented data marts (InfoObjects and InfoCube) in previous case studies. In this case study, David will load the original data into the database. The transaction data will be loaded in the next instance. Good to know when we define our InfoCube in the previous case study we used the InfoObjects Material, which we defined before, and the customer, which was sent to the UCC. Since UCC has also sent the customer’s original data, we only have to take care of the material’s original data. Materials have many properties, some of which also contain core information. Again, in most cases the original information is sent to the UCC. We only need to take care of the product category, where we kept the original data in the previous case study. The original data in BW consists of attributes (eg product type and department) and description (text). Since the description can be maintained in different languages, it is stored in a separate table with additional language codes. So loading original data is a two-step process. In BW 7, it is possible to model the data flow in graphic form. A data flow contains all necessary objects and their relationships while data is loaded. In addition, it is possible to use data flow templates that describe best practice scenarios and can support complex situations. Although we keep things simple in this course, we will use the data flow template in our next case study when loading transaction data. 1 Create data flow and load material attributes TASK Create a data flow object and include the data flow for loading master data in our Material InfoObject. Create data sources and transformations to load attributes. Loading the text will be done in the next task. Note When working with case studies, please replace all names with the course ID, and with the user ID (three digits) of your professor. 1 Open the Data Warehousing Workbench Open the Data Warehousing Workbench and navigate to the useful area for modeling data flows. Find an InfoArea assigned to your professor with technical details and students 1 Create data flow Create a data flow for the original data. Use and data flow master data for technical names and descriptions. Case study: Load master data into SAP BW Page 2 of 5 1 Add InfoObject material Use the InfoObject template to add the InfoObject for the material. Good to know that the system will insert the top node representing the InfoObject itself and tree for attributes, text and hierarchy. We will not use hierarchy here and return to this concept in the next module. 1 Check the master data load file Check the master data load file, GBI20ProductV01, to determine the data separator (eg comma) and number format used. You will need this information later in the exercise. 1 Create a data source Navigate to the DataSources section (1) and locate the application component assigned to your professor with a technical name and student details. First, you may need to select the correct source system PC_FILE (2), (3) and display an Empty folder. (4). Case study: Load master data into SAP BW Page 4 of 5 Good to know data sources can be created directly in the data flow. Because this is a bit, we recommend creating the first data source and assigning it to the data flow in the second step. As mentioned above, loading original data is a two-step process with two different data targets (attributes and text). First we load 1 Create transformation Create a transformation from your data source to the attributes of the original data InfoObject. 1 Create a data transfer process and load data Create and implement a data transfer process to load the properties of the material. 1 Confirm attributes Navigate to the document’s main data store to confirm the loading of attributes. Note Not all properties are filled in for all elements. E. Product category is added to the bicycle specification (BI department). This must match the source file. 2 Load material descriptions TASK Case study: Load master data into SAP BW Page 5 of 5 Update your data flow object to load material descriptions. Good to know that while our sample attributes and descriptions are stored in the same flat file, this is not the case in real life. The splitting of attributes and descriptions into two different files is mandatory when more than one language is involved since the system expects the description to send one record per item per language. In contrast, all attributes are contained in a single record per item. File separation requires an additional DataSource since each DataSource reflects the structure of the flat file. 2 Change data flow Open the data flow for the original data you created in the previous step (technical name: in change mode. 2 Create transformation Create a transformation from your data source to the description (text) of your main data InfoObject. Details in the translation file are in English only T. Hagen
