Is Type A Flu H1n1

Is Type A Flu H1n1 – Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza virus. These viruses infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. The severity of the disease can range from mild to severe and can lead to death. Influenza infects a variety of species, including humans, pigs, horses, dogs, marine mammals, and birds, including wild and poultry (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). There are four types of influenza: Influenza A, B, C and D (World Health Organization n.d.).

Influenza types A, B, and C can infect humans, whereas influenza type D is currently thought to infect only cattle and pigs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2021, and Snoeck C.J. et al. 2018). Influenza A infects most animal species, often resulting in a pandemic.

Influenza viruses are divided into subtypes based on their two proteins: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). There are currently 18 H and 11 N influenza viruses.

Symptoms Of Swine Flu

The influenza nomenclature formula identifies the type of influenza (A, B, C or D) and which protein H and/or N subtype the virus contains. For example, influenza A (Figure 1), which has 1 H subtype and 2 N subtypes, was named A(H1N1) and was responsible for the 1918 Spanish flu and 2009 swine flu pandemics. Waterfowl such as ducks and geese are the main natural reservoirs of most influenza A viruses. As hosts, they spread the influenza A virus around the world through natural migration, thereby preventing the virus from being eradicated. Four of these bird migration routes traverse the United States and include major poultry production areas (Figure 2).

All known subtypes of influenza A viruses can infect birds, with the exception of subtypes H17N10 and H18N11, which only infect bats (Centers for Disease and Control 2017). Influenza A viruses are classified as “avian flu” if they are first detected in birds. Humans can be infected by a variety of bird flu viruses, including:

Most cases of A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) influenza are associated with direct or indirect contact with infected live or dead poultry. Controlling diseases at source in animals is critical to reducing risks to humans.

Avian influenza A viruses are divided into low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A viruses, based on the virus’ genes and its ability to cause illness and death in laboratory chickens. While LPAI viruses do not cause disease or mild illness (decreased feathers and egg production), HPAI can cause severe illness and death. Both low-pathogenic and highly-pathogenic viruses can spread rapidly within herds. The HPAI H5 virus that infects birds in the United States has caused three subtypes: H5N1, H5N2, and H5N8. Most outbreaks of bird flu in the United States are caused by the HPAI (H5N2) virus. To date, no human infection with the HPAI H5 virus has been detected in the United States, but there have been 239 cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) in Asia since 2003, resulting in 134 deaths (World Health Organization 2022). .

In birds, HPAI virus infection (H5 or H7 viruses) causes disease affecting multiple internal organs and can result in 100% mortality, usually within 48 hours. When an outbreak of H5 or H7 avian influenza occurs in poultry, the infected flock is usually reduced in number or killed. The preferred method of stopping transmission is to isolate and screen herds that are close to or associated with infected herds. If the virus is detected, these herds are reduced in number to prevent further spread.

Human infection with avian influenza strains, which results from close contact with sick animals, is relatively rare and can be fatal. People who get infected with the A(H5) or A(H7N9) bird flu virus usually get sicker than people who get other types of flu. Initial symptoms include a high fever (greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) along with cough and difficulty breathing. Less common are runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough. Complications of infection include severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, multiple organ dysfunction, septic shock, and secondary bacterial and fungal infections. The mortality rate of human infection with A(H5) and A(H7N9) viruses is much higher than that of seasonal influenza infection, which can exceed 50%. Human infection with A(H7N7) and A(H9N2) avian influenza viruses is usually mild or subclinical.

As a result of the 1983-84 HPAI H5N2 outbreak, approximately 17 million chickens, turkeys, and guinea fowl were humanely euthanized in Pennsylvania and Virginia to contain and eradicate the disease. In 2015, HPAI A(H5N2) was associated with a large poultry outbreak affecting more than 49 million poultry in North America (International Wild Bird Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Surveillance Steering Committee 2016). In late December 2021, H5N1 was detected on a demonstration farm in eastern Canada, causing massive mortality before the remaining herd was euthanized (McCarthy 2021). On January 14, 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed that a U.S. wild animal from Colton County, South Carolina was infected with highly pathogenic Eurasian H5 avian influenza (HPAI) . HPAI has since been detected in several other wild birds in the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida, and Maryland. Current test results can be found on the USDA APHIS website at aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/avian/avian-influenza/2022-hpai.

Is Type A Flu H1n1

In virology, influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A/H1N1) is a subtype of influenza A virus. The main outbreaks of the H1N1 strain in humans were the Spanish flu, the 1977 Russian flu pandemic, and the 2009 swine flu pandemic. It is an orthomyxovirus containing hemagglutinin and neuraminidase glycoproteins. So, H1N1, H1N2, etc. Described as, depending on the type of metabolically synergistic H or N antibody they express. Hemagglutinin keeps red blood cells together and binds the virus to infected cells. Neuraminidase is a glycoside hydrolase that helps viral particles pass through infected cells and grow out of host cells.

Flu’s Clues: Mind Those H’s And N’s

Some H1N1 strains circulate in humans, causing a small percentage of all ILI and a small percentage of all seasonal influenza, such as 2004-2005.

Other strains of H1N1 circulate in pigs (swine flu) and birds (avian flu). Its size ranges from 80 to 120 nm (3.1 × 10

Genetic analyzes of the virus from tissues stored in medicine or in permafrost suggest that today’s seasonal H1N1 strains are descendants of the 1918 pandemic virus, but the results are inconclusive.

Afraid Of The H1n1 Virus? Know These Top 10 Facts

Swine flu (also known as swine flu or swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by influenza A virus. Influenza viruses that are commonly found in pigs are called swine influenza viruses (SIV). Known strains of SIV include influenza C and influenza A subtypes known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. Pigs can also be infected with H4N6 and H9N2 subtypes.

Swine influenza viruses are common in pig herds worldwide. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is uncommon and does not always cause influenza in humans, which usually only produces antibodies in the blood. If it spreads to cause influenza in humans, it is called zoonotic swine flu or a mutant virus. People who have frequent contact with pigs are at increased risk of contracting swine flu.
