Is Type A Flu H1n1 – Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza virus. These viruses infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. The severity of the disease can range from mild to severe and can lead to death. Avian influenza A viruses are divided into low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A viruses, based on the virus’ genes and its ability to cause illness and death in laboratory chickens. Most outbreaks of bird flu in the United States are caused by the HPAI (H5N2) virus. To date, no human infection with the HPAI H5 virus has been detected in the United States, but there have been 239 cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) in Asia since 2003, resulting in 134 deaths (World Health Organization 2022). .

In birds, HPAI virus infection (H5 or H7 viruses) causes disease affecting multiple internal organs and can result in 100% mortality, usually within 48 hours. When an outbreak of H5 or H7 avian influenza occurs in poultry, the infected flock is usually reduced in number or killed. The preferred method of stopping transmission is to isolate and screen herds that are close to or associated with infected herds. If the virus is detected, these herds are reduced in number to prevent further spread.

Human infection with avian influenza strains, which results from close contact with sick animals, is relatively rare and can be fatal. People who get infected with the A(H5) or A(H7N9) bird flu virus usually get sicker than people who get other types of flu. Initial symptoms include a high fever (greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) along with cough and difficulty breathing. Less common are runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough. Complications of infection include severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, multiple organ dysfunction, septic shock, and secondary bacterial and fungal infections. The mortality rate of human infection with A(H5) and A(H7N9) viruses is much higher than that of seasonal influenza infection, which can exceed 50%. Human infection with A(H7N7) and A(H9N2) avian influenza viruses is usually mild or subclinical.

On January 14, 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed that a U.S. wild animal from Colton County, South Carolina was infected with highly pathogenic Eurasian H5 avian influenza (HPAI) . HPAI has since been detected in several other wild birds in the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida, and Maryland.
