The last time Microsoft wasn’t a leader in analytics and business intelligence in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant, the Cleveland Browns had their most recent winning record. It’s 2007. While the Browns show serious promise next year (full disclosure: this writer is a Believeland fan) and many think they could even make the Playoffs, don’t expect Microsoft to leave the Quadrant magic soon .
Once again, not only is Microsoft the leader for the 12th year in a row, it has the best execution capabilities and the most comprehensive vision by far. Power BI continues to lead the way, available in the cloud (SaaS, Azure) and on-premises (Power BI Report Server).

MQ research for BI has been going on for almost a decade. It is a reference document for buyers of Business Intelligence technology.
At first glance, it doesn’t seem like much has changed… BUT, if you look closely, you’ll find that some of the biggest changes in Magic Quadrant history have just happened…

For the first time in 3 years, Gartner removed a large number of vendors from its quadrant. There were 24 vendors in the Enterprise Quadrant in 2016 and 2017. This year, the Magic Quadrant lists just 20 vendors…that’s a 16% reduction in the quadrant. Is the market down?!
Not exactly: the market has changed… and in a very predictable way. See our 3-year movement analysis table below: we see consistent stories, e.g. the greats are getting older, some of the visionaries have sunk (or disappeared) and a few ‘trend-setters’ have graduated. More precision:
You’ll find copies of the Magic Song on some vendor websites, and we’re sure your team will be eager to review the 60+ page document. But before you do, we suggest you focus on some of the “planning ideas” highlighted on the first page of the document. Specifically:
Monday Insight From Sophos
We think Gartner is making an important point here: business consulting is about business value. “Personal service BI,” the trend that drove the industry’s 60% year-over-year growth in 2015 created an unexpected result: companies bought more BI tools. Some added value. Some don’t. The result: In 2017, the market grew by an average of 10%, and Gartner now predicts it will grow by 8% through 2021.
This Magic Quadrant was due to be released on February 16th according to Gartner’s website. We can only guess that the reason it took a few more weeks is because of some big changes that occurred in this year’s edition.
Some of the biggest players in the tech industry were left out of this year’s report: Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ) are starting to have a growing influence in the space. Both have the ability to see. Surprisingly they only get a few mentions in the entire report: Amazon is mentioned 8 times, Google only 4 times…

It is difficult to mention the last three years and predict what the next three years will be like. However, we hope our 3-year trend analysis table will help you make the best choice for your organization. In addition to the table, here are some additional facts:
Now, as we explained on our MQ analysis website (the recording is available here), remember that parameters change over time. The move is a factor of many factors: vendor capabilities, but also Gartner’s approach each year.
