Business Intelligence Visual Studio 2017 – In this article, I will introduce the Tabular Object Model (TOM) in the Power BI data model and provide an understanding of how to access this model outside of the Power BI environment. For more information about the tabular object model in the Power BI data model, read this article. In this tutorial, we will write a simple .net console program using Visual Studio code and try to access the Tabular Object Model from the Power BI file. With this knowledge, programmers and BI developers can not only see the underlying model in the Power BI data model, but also programmatically improve the data model by writing a few lines of code. It can be further enhanced by the automatic creation of Power BI models with the help of the Tabular Object Model library in .NET.
First of all, since we will be using Visual Studio Code to connect to the Power BI Data Model, let’s install it on our machine. Go to the official website of Visual Studio Code and download the corresponding version of the tool. Since I’m on Windows, I’ll go ahead and download the latest Windows version of the tool.

Once you have downloaded the tool to your local, go ahead and install the same. Keep the default settings when installing, I already installed this tool, so I did not install it again.
Getting Started With Data Tier Applications In Visual Studio
Once you have Visual Studio Code installed, the next step is to download and install the Dotnet core SDK. Please note that we need to install the dotnet core SDK and not the runtime. At the time of this writing, the latest version of the .NET Core SDK available is 3.1.302. You can download it from here. Depending on your internet connection, it may take some time to download. After downloading, go ahead and install the same with recommended settings.
As you can see in the figure above, after the installation is complete, run the command “dotnet -info”. You can see the latest version installed on your device along with previously installed versions.
Now that we have the Dotnet core SDK installed on our machine, we are ready to create the console application that we will use to interact with the Power BI Data Model. Create a folder under which you want to build the program. After entering the directory, run the following command.

It will be the main file where we will write all our code related to the Power BI Data Model. You can already open this file and it has sample code that you can build and run.
As you can see, we have successfully built and run our application. The next step is to include the Tabular Object Model library in this program so that we can use it in our program. You can run the following command to install the package in the console program.

The installation will take some time and then you can see that the package has been installed successfully.
Now that we have the TOM library installed in the console application, we can go ahead and start using this library in our code. For this tutorial, I will use a sample Power BI report that I downloaded from the official Microsoft documentation. The idea is to create a small application that can connect to this Power BI report and display a list of tables in it.
Let me go ahead and open the sample report in Power BI Desktop. You can see the names of the tables on the right.

As you can see, there are six different tables in this Power BI template. We will try to see the same in the console application.
Go to Visual Studio Code and paste the following code there. Be sure to change the port number of the analysis service server as it will be different in your case. To find out the port number, you can follow one of the techniques mentioned in this article.

In our case, since we only have a tabular database, we try to get the data model from the first database itself. Once the data model is captured in the console application, we can run a command that returns the names of each of the tables in that data model.
Here you can see the list of table names in the Power BI Data Model that is displayed. This is a very simple setup where I just list the names of the tables in the data model. With the tabular object model library, you can perform many other automated operations, such as adding metrics to an existing data model or copying metrics from one model to another, and so on. In addition, you can also register your console application with Power BI Desktop and you can use your application as a toolbar in the Power BI Desktop application. Here are some of the complex tasks that can be accomplished using the Tabular Templates Client Library for .NET.
Although this should not be a preferred way of working with Power BI Data Models, the purpose of this article was simply to clarify how to get started with the console application while using the TOM library. Various tools like DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, etc. are used by the Power BI community that can be used to modify the data model outside of the Power BI environment.

SSDT is backwards compatible, so you can still use the latest SSDT to design and deploy databases, models, reports, and packages that run on older versions of SQL Server.

Historically, the Visual Studio shell used to create a variety of SQL Server content has been released under various names, including SQL Server Data Tools, SQL Server Data Tools – Business Intelligence, and Business Intelligence Development Studio. Previous versions came with different sets of project templates. You need the latest version to collect all the project templates together in one SSDT. Otherwise, you may need to install several previous versions to get all the templates used in SQL Server. Only one shell is installed per version of Visual Studio. A second SSDT install will only add the missing templates.
Starting with Visual Studio 2017, the ability to create database projects has been built into the Visual Studio installation. There is no need to install the standalone SSDT installer for the original SSDT experience.
Now you still need the standalone SSDT installer to create Analysis Services, Integration Services or Reporting Services.

To install SSDT, during the Visual Studio installation, select the Data Storage and Processing workload, and then select SQL Server Data Tools.
If Visual Studio is already installed, use the Visual Studio Installer to modify the installed workloads.
