Jason Jameson: Business Intelligence (BI) is a subset of Big Data Analytics (BDA). Traditional BI tools allow you to analyze data based on your hypothesis. Data must be in a specific organizational format before it can be analyzed. It is probably the simplest form of BI on the web. For example, you can create formulas to produce results from multiplying a set of numbers.
With BDA, you can break down structured and unstructured data into any available format. And based on that, the BDA tool can generate a list of questions or queries for the user to choose from and determine what they want to get from the data. BDA helps you find insights that couldn’t be done before.
The main difference is that the result from BDA is comprehensive and conclusive. BI gives you an in-depth dashboard view that can help drive business decisions.

In short, BI tools allow us to answer questions about what we know ie. “What are our KPIs from the data warehouse?”, while BDA allows us to answer questions we didn’t know we were asking before.
Jason Jameson: The question is whether we want our team to make better decisions. If the team’s answer from management is a yes, then the workforce needs to be trained on how to use BI tools to discern the types of data and how to process the data to produce the desired results. But, as mentioned above, BI is a subset of BDA, and in order for the company to get the most out of data, comprehensive solutions that process structured and unstructured data are needed.
This has implications for skills and practices, as big data development tools become much easier for the average user. In this way we have the ability to train staff to explore and analyze data in Big Data – which is what data scientists mostly do today – in the same way that we train staff to use traditional BI tools, spreadsheets etc.

Jason Jameson: BI products can be customized to break down large amounts of data to provide useful information. With BI, you can draw relationships between different sets of data or between structured and unstructured data. For example, you can analyze weather data from a multitude of sources, including real-time data from IoT devices. And this can be done very quickly. Spreadsheets won’t have the same speed as a BI product in handling large volumes of data, but Spreadsheets are still a useful tool for presenting and plotting results from a BI tool.
Jason Jameson: Key insights are ease of use, high performance, and enough functionality to serve the increasingly sophisticated user experience, and more so in the desktop browser as well as the mobile experience. You can tell that a user is becoming sophisticated by the type of questions that come up. IBM Cognos and SPSS are two examples of applications that provide rich tools for users to start small and scale as their needs and requirements grow.
Jason Jameson: The beauty of IBM is the wide and rich range of different roles it can offer the casual data scientist user. As we have received many solutions, but for the most part it is the ability to implement solutions for the use of the project. For example, a casual user may use Watson Analytics as available. More than 6,000 users from Asia Pacific have signed up to use Watson Analytics. A business or enterprise can choose to use either IBM Cognos or SPSS depending on their needs. Celcom, a Malaysian telephone company, used IBM Unique to create targeted marketing campaigns.
