I’ll let you in on a little secret – Microsoft isn’t really trying to sell Power BI. What I mean is that Microsoft salespeople are hardly compensated for selling licenses. Instead, they are focused on Azure, O365 and Surface devices. This means no dull salesmen, attractive offers and 3-year contract terms for you. Satya Nadella and his team envisioned a product that would “sell” itself and build a cult-like community of followers. They did exactly that. Four years later, we are seeing this vision play out and Power BI organically spreading within organizations and across industries.

More and more companies are embedding Power BI reports into MS Teams, SharePoint and integrating these insights into Outlook, Excel and OneDrive. Power BI is part of the Microsoft Power Platform – which includes Power Apps, Power Automate. The growing analytics platform also features modeling capabilities familiar to SQL Server developers. It also provides seamless integration for organizations using Azure – Microsoft’s cloud platform. This may be first on the list for some companies. Power BI reshaped the landscape with its pricing model. This platform has ensured that analytics is no longer a luxury commodity for a few, but affordable for small to mid-sized companies looking to leverage real-time analytics as a competitive advantage. Power BI offers a free desktop download. The ability to publish reports, share dashboards and use insights will cost $10/month per user license. In the past, some competitors charged 10x this amount for data visualization products. We believe the days of expensive standalone data visualization platforms are over.
Chances are, your organization is already sending out some awesome Power BI reports. Chances are also that most of your company’s reports look very similar to the Excel/SSRS reports you’ve been using for the past decade. In 2020, we believe companies will implement a framework to provide a security, governance and administration framework for their Power BI environment. The same companies will seek to improve performance and scalability by increasing their data modeling capabilities in Azure. Companies will continue to move away from pie charts and tables in Power BI – and instead use custom visuals and data storytelling to promote data literacy across their organization. After all, Power BI will only go as far as an organization’s ability to foster a data-driven culture.

Microsoft Positioned As A Leader In The Gartner 2021 Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms
Can I take some space to rant (of course I can it’s my blog post) I really wish Gartner would change this title to the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms. The reason is that there is still a big difference between Business Analytics and Advanced Analytics capabilities.

Overall, not a big change between 2017 and 2018. Once again we see the top three visual discovery vendors, Tableau, Qlik and Microsoft widening the gap in the leader quadrant.
