The state of Florida and the Department of Aging require new administrators to take a 26-hour course and pass a state exam. All courses given by trainers recognized by ALF Core meet this requirement. However, the topics covered take much more time to fully understand. Managing a residential care home is not easy and there are many rules to follow.
We took the ALF core training on site and the course quickly took 4 and 1/2 days. Believe me, this was not enough time to cover some difficult issues in detail. This online course is designed so that you can work at your own pace and lasts up to 4 months. This allows you to focus on areas that need more time and attention. The on-site training we took had no questions and nothing to prepare us for the state exam. When we designed this course, we wanted this to be a focus. Most modules offer questions to better absorb the material and, like the state exam, some questions are difficult. You can retake questions as many times as you like without penalty. We only need 50% marks to pass the quiz and move on to the next module. In total, this course consists of more than 280 questions, which have been combined into a final exam. The completion test is a great resource for you and only requires 1% correct to complete and receive your certificate of completion.

Cheryl and her husband started at Ocean Breeze Gardens (OBG) in 2007. They designed it and opened it from the ground up. OBG opened in 2009 with 6 beds and expanded to 32 beds in 2012. Sherrill has done everything from planning and zoning approvals, concept approvals, fire inspections, initial permit applications, operations, and sales and marketing. She has done 5 capacity building projects and conducted over 15 AHCA audits. Sherrill has a B.S. in business administration and elementary education.
