Ibm Cognos Business Intelligence 11 – This is the second part of our series on Cognos Analytics 11. In the first part, we discussed an overview of new features and detailed data modules and dashboards.
The report module is a new module that allows you to build self-service reports for analysis and data exploration, as well as building large-scale reports and questionnaires. It has a simple and intuitive drag and drop user interface for creating ad hoc queries. This module replaces Report Studio, Analysis Studio, Query Studio and Workspace Advanced but uses the same metadata definition as the old studios. This means that reports created in earlier versions of IBM Cognos can be easily upgraded to the latest version. The report module is used for building reports but also for performing ad-hoc analysis.

The interface is very modern and very intuitive, showing the action only when necessary. Despite the “simple” style, all the functionality available in Report Studio is there. It takes a while to get used to the new interface and get all the menus. By using sliding panels, the workspace is best used when designing a display that allows the user to choose to show or hide assets and free up the workspace as necessary.

A report can be presented in full contact information and general information. A full-featured viewer allows users to modify the display such as scrolling, filtering and sorting data, selecting a different chart or switching between a crosstab and a list. This functionality is similar to that found in Cognos Workspace. Customers can save any changes they make to a report. The custom viewer provides the familiar and reliable viewer used in earlier versions of Cognos. By default, communication is enabled for new reports and disabled for updated reports. This behavior can be easily changed by setting a display value. It should be noted that common reports can be changed without any problems, but special cases, such as reports using JavaScript or the Prompt API, will need some changes to work properly.
Drilling up and down a hierarchy, for example: moving down a hierarchy like world-continent-country-province-city-street-house, is a great feature from days before OLAP analysis. The user can quickly update the problem areas in the database. There is another type of extension called drill-through. Drill-through opens a more detailed report when you click on a cell or button. Display parameters are determined from the caller to the receiving display, limiting the amount of data displayed in the context of the display call.
The non-playable viewer supports drill up/down and drill down like previously released ones. The use of the full interactive mode for drilling is supported, although there are some limitations at this time: the full game viewer does not support drilling and digging lists. Drill through is not supported on data modules, but is on packages. This feature will be added in a future version. However, the game viewer offers more options for data exploration than just spinning. The tool allows the user to change the filter, sorting, add summaries, delete nulls, change rows and columns, and change the shape of the chart. Advanced configuration data is also available in this toolbox. Lineage and Glossary are supported for Framework Manager and Dynamic Cubes but only when running in a neutral viewer.

The configuration functions allow the user to perform ad-hoc analysis of the data. It can be added, deleted, moved and replaced by different levels of children. Creating a “topX” is very easy and requires one click. It works very well to expand/compress members. This function expands a member with its children to a new column, just like it does in Excel. A group of members can be added to a common group, for example to join two parts in an overlay design.
When it comes to publishing reports, there is a difference between the unobserved and the unobserved. The non-gaming viewer will export PDF, Excel (binary and standardized data) and raw data in CSV. XML is removed from the server, but can be done with the SDK. When running from within the interactive viewer, only HTML and PDF can be selected. However, it is possible to export another version by selecting “Run as” in the window.
When creating a new report, a default layout, report style, and topic can be selected. This allows the author to quickly create a report that has a responsive and attractive design.

There are several examples and a distinction is made between a regular report and an Active report. The former is for online use, the latter can be found abroad and offers more options for communication.
The next step in building a report is to select a data source to feed the report with data. The object of a report can be a package and a data module. The types of data sources that can be used to build reports are many and include Hadoop, cubing techniques and large database vendors. Included with the Cognos Analytics installation is Dynamic Cubes, an in-memory cubing technology that is free to use and provides significant performance gains in query times. (for more information &&hyperlink http:///e/resourc-detail.asp?ResourceId=754 ) IBM Cognos PowerCubes are supported as data sources. PowerCubes is the only IBM Cognos OLAP technology that makes it easy to integrate multiple data sources, whether it’s databases or spreadsheets.
In a future release, IBM plans to add the ability to use multiple packages/databases to build a report. Now, multiple data sources can be integrated into one package using the Framework Manager, and multiple data modules can be integrated into a parent data module.

Clicking on the plus sign brings up a pop-up menu that allows you to quickly select the items used. Templates offer a responsive design, which means that the size of columns and rows will change depending on the device the report is running on. The color scheme allows you to quickly adjust the presentation of interest without having to manually change all aspects. Using display properties, the format can be changed to a custom format or default template. Currently these features are not customizable but this is planned for a future release.
On the left side of the screen, some pictures show the top jobs. The first shows all the data elements in the package and the questions in the report. The toolbox shows all the things that can be installed, sorted by usage. The tool will display different parameters when creating a custom display vs. The latter number is used to view test pages, edit questions and test modes (active).
When editing a report, the report can be viewed in the Design, Page Preview, and Page Structure pages. The Preview Page will provide a display with a limited set of data, which is convenient for quickly testing configuration changes. Page Layout is the general writing area and Page Structure will show an outline of all the sections on the page. This information is useful when dealing with multiple nested areas.

The Properties response will show the advanced properties of the objects and will be very familiar to experienced bloggers.
Editing queries is very common in Report Studio. Data elements can be selected from the package or custom data elements can be added. When the package is large, slicer filters can be added to the query. With related factors, specific filters can be added. When you click on the Queries folder, an overview of all queries is displayed. In conjunction with the toolbox, new questions can be added or existing questions can be added using various configuration functions.
There are 2 types of reports that can be built. The first is a custom display that uses quick properties to provide user interaction. These reports can be organized, explosive, and have been the de facto standard for reporting for years. Each time a prompt value is filled, a query is triggered and the display is updated. These reports can only be used when connected to the system, unless the report is exported to PDF or Excel. Therefore, these reports can benefit from the data protection specified in the package. For example, a section manager can see several sections in a report. Each time the report is given, the correct data limit is maintained.
New Feature Alert: Enabling Content Sharing By Email In Ibm Cognos Analytics
From Cognos Business Intelligence 10, a second type of report has been added: Active Reports. Powerful reports provide dashboards tailored to the big picture to accommodate more interactions. Reports are initialized, so when you apply new filters, there’s no question that the data is there. There is no need to connect to the server because a dynamic report is stored in a separate file. This allows easy delivery via email or mobile phone. The interaction
