The job of a business intelligence analyst varies from company to company, but the main questions are often about KPIs. How is the company doing? What are the sales markers? A BI analyst takes a top-down approach to answering these questions. For example, let’s say my company’s sales are down. In the BI analyst, this drop is from a specific region, a specific product/service, a specific sales representative, etc.

You don’t need a technical background, but be prepared to learn the technical side of the job. Owning a business is really rewarding because it helps you understand business issues, understand the business itself, and create insights for stakeholders. It helps to ask the right questions to understand business needs. Technical knowledge is useful in this field because you can provide information about what you can deliver. As you progress from a Data Analyst role to a BI Analyst role and a mix between the two, additional technical skills such as SQL are required. I would recommend it to anyone in a data-driven role who has a solid understanding of a visualization tool like Excel, SQL, and Tableau.
